Born on 22 April 1977 in Maasbracht, Netherlands, Van Bommel began his football journey at local club RKVV Maasbracht before joining Fortuna Sittard. He made his professional debut for Fortuna in 1993 at just 16 years old, quickly establishing himself as a talented central midfielder. His performances earned him a move to PSV Eindhoven in 1999, where he became a key figure in one of the Netherlands’ strongest teams.
At PSV, Van Bommel developed into a complete midfielder capable of defending, creating chances and scoring goals. Between 1999 and 2005, he won four Eredivisie titles and became a team leader under coaches such as Eric Gerets and Guus Hiddink. In 2001, he was named Dutch Footballer of the Year, and his influence was especially important during PSV’s memorable 2004-05 Champions League campaign, when the club reached the semi-finals.
